Here's the deal:  I've been a professional programmer for about 10 years.  Most of that time, I've worked in Perl.  Nowadays, I am self-employed and work pretty much exclusively in Perl.  I like it a lot, for a lot of reasons that I think are valid.

It seems like a lot of other techies don't like Perl.  Their reasons seem to reduce to a fairly small set (see below), and their attitudes seem to reduce to dismissive, contemptuous, and/or scornful.  Periodically, I meet one of these people (usually online) and have to have the same conversation.  I'm thoroughly sick of having that conversation, so I'm going to post it here so that in the future, I can just provide a link and be done with it.


Oh, one last thing: if you feel like you made some very innocuous comment and then got directed to this horrible rant and you feel like you've been unjustly accused of proselytizing and such...then I apologize. I have this conversation A LOT, and I am really, REALLY sick of it. I have tried to make this post as non-judgemental as I can, but I'm sure that certain traces of my waspishness are going to leak through. Let me know what you found objectionable and, assuming I agree with you, I'll see if I can't clean it up.
